Why Management Sims Live Or Die On Pacing
Management sims are my comfort genre, but they are hard to get right on a phone. The systems can be brilliant and the game still fails if the first hour is dull.
Harborworks Tycoon nearly lost me because its tutorial explained everything and taught nothing. It was only once cargo started piling up that the optimisation puzzle revealed itself, and then I was hooked.
The lesson for players: give a sim a little longer than feels fair. The genre often front-loads the boring parts and saves the good tension for when your systems get big enough to strain.
The lesson for developers, if any are reading: let me make a mess early. Watching a bad plan cascade into a jam is far more instructive than a page of tooltips.
