Spire of Embers
★★★★☆ 4.3
Spire of Embers is a proper RPG that fits in your pocket. You build a party of four, descend a cursed tower floor by floor, and every encounter is a small tactical puzzle. Positioning, cooldowns and elemental weaknesses all matter.
Character progression is the hook. Each hero has a branching skill tree, and there is no single correct build, so respec is cheap and encouraged. I ran a full support party once just to see if it worked, and it did, in a slow, grinding way.
The writing is better than it needs to be. NPCs remember your choices, and a couple of side quests actually made me stop and think. Combat can drag on longer floors, but the tactical depth kept me pulling it out on the train every day.
What we liked
- Flexible skill trees with cheap respecs
- Tactical, position-based combat
- Story that respects your choices
